Bernhard Sinkel's directorial debut is one of the most successful productions of the New German Cinema. The house in which pensioner Lina Braake lives becomes the property of a bank after the owner's death. Although she has been promised a lifelong right of residence, the bank has Lina placed in a retirement home. There she meets 84-year-old Gustaf, a former banker who knows all the tricks of the trade. Together they devise a plan to get revenge on the bank and get the necessary change for a suitable retirement home.
