The event
The award-winning documentary "Herr Schmidt und Herr Friedrich" returns to the big screen - a moving evening about love, memory and an extraordinary life together.
As part of QueerHistoryMonth 2026, the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival in cooperation with Metropolis Kino presents the award-winning documentary Herr Schmidt und Herr Friedrich.
The film tells the moving story of Kurt Schmidt and Wilfried Friedrich, who share a great passion: the world of Schlager. Separated by the inner-German border, they met in 1977 - "an intense connection", as even the Stasi noted. Neither state barriers nor social prejudices can separate them permanently, even though Mr. Friedrich applies in vain for a long time to be expatriated. The film shows their life together and lets them tell their 24-year relationship in their own bizarre and touching way.
Introduction and queer-historical classification by Mira-Kristin Saitzek. A special movie night that touches and lingers.
Directed by Ulrike Franke, Michael Loeken, D, 2001, 69 min, German original version, 35mm, analog film projection
