QUEERHISTORYMONTH
QueerHistoryMonth will take place in Hamburg from May 1 to 31, 2026(www.queerhistoryhamburg.de). Various events as part of the festival will bring the history(ies) of the queer community in Hamburg to life. Everyone is welcome - kings, queers, queens, allies, friends, families (of choice) and everyone in between and beyond!
The event
Rosa von Praunheim's cult musical impressively shows queer subcultures in West Berlin in the 1980s: real icons, families of choice, longing for freedom - a moving, historically contextualized film evening with an introduction.
As part of QueerHistoryMonth 2026, the Hamburg International Queer Film Festival is presenting Rosa von Praunheim's queer cult musical City of Lost Souls (1983) in cooperation with Metropolis Kino.
The film portrays the lives of US cabaret performers - drag artists and dancers as well as people from marginalized communities, including Black and Jewish people, queer and trans* people, who search for social acceptance, self-determination and creative freedom in West Berlin in the early 1980s.
The protagonists are real personalities from the queer subculture. In addition to Jayne County and Tara O'Hara, icon Angie Stardust can also be seen. In the film, her boarding house in West Berlin becomes the refuge of a dazzling family of choice. Angie Stardust, who died in 2007, opened Angie's Nightclub on Hamburg's Reeperbahn in 1991. A place where she herself performed and which quickly became an important meeting place for Hamburg's queer scene.
Introduction and queer-historical classification by Saeleen Bouvar. An evening full of life, stories and lasting impressions!
