Montagsspiel - "Im Osten was Neues"

"Sport is apolitical.", "Politics out of the stadium.", "In soccer, only the game counts."
Sentences like these are like a blood curdling rant from the 80s: unattractive, outdated and above all dangerous.
Soccer has long been a social space in which all the issues of our time can and must be discussed.
This is exactly where the format "Monday Match - Football Culture Politics Entertainment" comes in. A compact neologism for a multi-layered format. Once a month, Gregor Ryl and Peter Farhangian will talk about the big and small issues surrounding soccer, society and politics together with changing experts and you as the audience.

In May, they will be showing the film "Im Osten was Neues". The focus is on Thomas "Eichi" Eichstätt, a former right-wing extremist and now volunteer coach of FC Pio in the small town of Torgelow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Many of his players have a history of flight. How does that fit together? And what role can soccer play in building bridges, promoting empathy and helping people to find their feet in life again? After the film, the two of them want to talk about this with you and the director Loraine Blumenthal.
