Till Eulenspiegel is the jester par excellence. His name stands for crude jokes at the expense of others, from whom he profits the most. Whether he is dancing on a tightrope, teaching a donkey to read or baking owls, his pranks not only arouse admiration but also incur displeasure. Eulenspiegel is primarily concerned with himself. Holding up a mirror to others and pointing out grievances is something he does in passing. Because he is looking for his own way through a life full of rules. So it's no wonder that Till is not a welcome guest. If he does turn up, most people want to get him under control so that he can't do any harm. Is it even possible to keep this cunning master of the art of living in check?
Nils Zapfe takes the medieval collection of tales as a basis and brings his witty new play to the open-air stage at the zoo. He asks critically what function rules have and when they lose their purpose.
