This demonstration will take place in addition to a workshop on digital tools at the Kunstakademie Karlsruhe. The workshop is organized by Atelier Digitale Souveränität and is part of the joint project "Digital Sovereignty for Art Academies".
Director: Gints Zilbalodis | Latvia, Belgium, France 2024 | 85 min | DCP | Without dialog
Flow (orig.: Straume) tells the story of a cat trying to survive in a dystopian world after a great flood. The independent animated film by Gints Zilbakis deals with themes such as survival and community, but completely dispenses with dialog. Flow has won various awards, including the Oscar for best animated film. The production of the film is particularly special: without a storyboard, the film was primarily created using the free open source 3D graphics program Blender, marking a deliberate break with industry standards. The director explained: "I think that if you're working on a smaller indie-scale project, you shouldn't try to copy what big studios do. Instead, you should develop a workflow that best suits you and your smaller team." The success of Flow shows that limited resources do not necessarily have to restrict a film production if creative and technical freedom are productively combined.
The Atelier Digitale Souveränität is dedicated to actively shaping the digital transformation. It supports students and staff at art academies in working independently and freely in the digital world.
The Atelier is the cross-university team of the joint project "Digital Sovereignty for Art Universities", in which the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe and the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe are involved. The project is funded by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre (October 2025 - December 2029).
In the summer semester, the studio will lead a workshop on digital tools, in which we will focus in particular on the 3D graphics program Blender, a free alternative to proprietary programs such as Rhino or Maya. As free open source software, Blender is the product of a dedicated community. With the film screening, we want to open up the dialog and question the importance of software standards in artistic production.
