Max patrols through a barren, dusty world where gasoline and violence are more precious than morality. The highways are hunting grounds for gangs and police, lost existences drift through a society that is left to its own devices. Between the noise of engines, explosions and growing brutality, his belief in order is shattered. When his best friend dies on a mission and the sadistic Toecutter destroys his family, Max becomes "Mad Max", who, armed and driven by revenge, roams the sweltering streets of Australia to hunt down the gangs and restore justice. Mad Max is the uncompromising debut from director George Miller. With minimalist storytelling, merciless chases and raw violence, it establishes a unique end-time style and popularizes the apocalyptic road movie. The film marked a turning point in the action genre, influenced later blockbusters and drew international attention to Australian cinema, while at the same time vividly reflecting social fears about the scarcity of resources, violence and the collapse of order.
