Engl. Title: Out of Breath, Director: Jean-Luc Godard | France 1960 | 90 min | 35mm | original version with German subtitles | with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Daniel Boulanger
Why not just run away together? In this milestone of the Nouvelle Vague, the small-time crook Michel and his American acquaintance Patricia embody the ideal of a free, albeit complicated, love that was just as much in the air at the time as the cinematic awakening. Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) actually wanted to flee to Italy in a stolen car. But after he shoots a policeman on the run, he has to go into hiding in Paris. There he meets Patricia (Jean Seberg) again, who sells newspapers on the Champs-Élysées. A loose affair develops between the two, characterized by Patricia's lack of commitment - a field of tension that leads to numerous legendary dialogues. Meanwhile, the net of the manhunt is inexorably tightening around Michel. There is hardly a work that divides film history so radically into a before and an after as Jean-Luc Godard's debut. With a masterful stroke of the hand, he overturned the conventional laws of cinema and completely redefined the rules of viewing and showing.
