Director: Barbara Loden | USA 1970 | 103 min | 35mm | English original version | with Barbara Loden, Michael Higgins, Dorothy Shupenes
Wanda (played by Loden herself) lives with her husband and two children in a shack in a dreary coal mining area. Because she leaves the housework undone, her husband files for divorce. Wanda gives up her previous life, relinquishes custody of her children - "they are better off with him" - loses her job and drifts through poor Pennsylvania on her own. When she meets a petty crook in a bar, she allows herself to be drawn into a bank robbery. Barbara Loden's unsentimental directorial debut remains her only feature-length film and is now regarded as one of the most important films in US independent cinema of the 1970s. "The miracle for me lies not in the way she acts but in the fact that she is even more herself in the movie [...] than she must have been in life [...]. I insist on this because it really shook me up. It's as if in the film she achieves a kind of sacralization of what she wants to show as a state of decay, but which, I think, is something glorious, a very, very strong, very violent and very deep glow." (Marguerite Duras)
