The five sisters of the Lisbon family grow up between wistful dreams and the dreary reality of conservative suburban life in the 1970s. Isolated from the rest of the world and the dangers that lurk within it according to their religious and overprotective parents. They have to stay away from their male peers in particular. For the boys in the neighborhood, girls in general and the Lisbon sisters in particular are mystical and unfathomable beings, not least because of their unattainability. When the first sister takes her own life, it sets off a sinister chain reaction. With her debut film, Sofia Coppola explored the aesthetics of femininity and the inner lives of young women at the same time. An adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides' popular first novel, The Virgin Suicides evokes the indescribable melancholy of teenage longing.
