In the Pennsylvania countryside, the dead rise from their graves and prey on the rural population with cannibalistic motives. A handful of transients take refuge in the remote house of a highly nervous nuclear family, where they soon find themselves under a massive siege ... George A. Romero made his directorial debut as a leisure project and on a minimal budget. He not only directed and wrote the screenplay, but also acted as cameraman and editor. He managed to overturn common film conventions with simple means and thus created a new kind of horror film. Ben, played by Duane Jones, was also one of the first black heroes in film history. After its premiere, Night of the Living Dead was initially disparaged by critics as banal, but has established itself as a cult film over the years. It is considered a genre-defining milestone in horror cinema, the influence of which can still be felt today. With this film, Romero laid the foundation for his long career as a master of the zombie film.
