In China in the 1990s, young art students dream of great love, an artistic breakthrough and understanding the meaning of life. But they first have to find out exactly what all this means. Between the departure into a capitalist future, the opening up to the West and the many possible paths in life, they search for orientation. As caricatures of themselves, they create contradictory visions of their future and show themselves to be deeply human.

In 1990s China, a group of art students dream of true love, artistic success, and a meaningful life.
