Director: Apichatpong Weerasethakul | Thailand, Netherlands 2000 | 89 min | DCP | original version with English subtitles | with Duangjai Hiransri, Somsri Pinyopol, Kannikar Narong
Apichatpong Weerasethakul's directorial debut, whose original Thai title translates roughly as "Blue Flower in the Hand of the Devil", can be imagined as a kind of whispered message: The film crew travels through Thailand, tells a story, has it acted out by the local people, who contribute their own details and myths, creating a whole web of new stories. These come together to form a kind of new cryptic creation story. In just under 90 minutes, this experimental documentary film shot on 16mm shows us a Thailand beyond the tourist strongholds; a country in constant motion and development. The fact that Apichatpong Weerasethakul is not interested in conventional narrative styles in cinema is already evident in his debut. In his later works, including the Cannes winner Uncle Boonmee Remembers His Past Lives, retold stories and myths also play a role, but there fiction actually becomes reality.
Supporting film: Südausgang Hauptbahnhof Director: Eva Hartmann | Germany 2008 | 4 min | SD Video | Without dialog
This camera exercise creates a portrait of the south exit of Karlsruhe's main railway station. All the more valuable almost 15 years later, when all you can see there are the glass facades of 1&1. A small piece of city history: in Eva Hartmann's observation of the south exit of the main station, we see the rear exit of Karlsruhe's main station, which is now completely covered up, and follow the street sweepers at the old bus station. The film was part of a camera exercise with camerawoman Jutta Tränkle, who was invited by Thomas Heise. All films were shot in color and in 16mm, the sound was added in a sound seminar.
