Kulturarena Jena | Nouvelle Vague

It's been a while since we had the pleasure of welcoming Nouvelle Vague to Jena: The French band first wowed us back in 2006 - shortly after their first successes and with two albums released at the time. The two masterminds and producers Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux were already transforming immortal hits from the 70s and 80s into melancholy, sweet songs. With great sensitivity, they often sowed the seeds of doubt as to whether they might not be originals after all. All just stolen? Nope. Greatly rebuilt!

This approach worked, not least thanks to the outstanding singers who were recruited for the project. Ideally, they didn't even know the originals beforehand and were therefore able to give the songs their very own flavor and voice. In this way, well-known new wave hits were transformed into fresh bossa nova works, some of which still stand on their own today.

A lot has happened in the meantime, of course. On the following albums, not only were the creators of some of the original works personally invited to the recording microphone or lesser-known French songs reinterpreted - Nouvelle Vague also impressed with their own compositions.

The last time we were able to experience the ever-changing line-up was in Jena in 2019. In addition to all-time classics such as "In A Manner Of Speaking" or "Too Drunk To Fuck", the band celebrated several new works. And today? A few more chapters have been added to the band's history: Founder Olivier Libaux sadly passed away, a band anniversary was celebrated, they returned to their acoustic roots - and the number of albums has continued to grow. There are now ten of them, the most recent being Should I Stay or Should I Go.

New Wave = Wave Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague. If anyone can deconstruct the term "cover band" and give it a sparkle, it's Novelle Vague: effective arrangements, melodious vocals and great stage shows.
